Valhalla is off to the races with showcase prep cross-country

The Valhalla High School cross country team is high stepping it after winning three division championships and placing runner-up in another at last Friday’s 23rd annual Mustang Invitational at Chula Vista’s Rohr Park.

The Norsemen swept titles in the boys and girls varsity Silver Division and also won the boys junior varsity Silver Division title. For good measure, the East County team finished runner-up in the girls JV Silver Division team standings.

Monte Vista tries to stay afloat as new season begins

For Monte Vista’s water polo team, rebuilding its program is an upstream swim. Ten seniors down from last year’s roster, the Monarchs are small in numbers, limited in experience, but fully loaded with good humor and hope.

Team captain Arturo Rodriguez said this is a growth year for the Monarchs and that the young team has adjusted its playing strategy accordingly.

Reviving the film industry in East County San Diego

More than a century ago, East County San Diego was one of the world premiere locations for movie making, starting with silent productions filmed in Lakeside by the American Film Manufacturing Company, also known as Flying “A” Studios, with famous Allan Dwan as a director. First ever movies to be completed in Lakeside are “A Daughter of Liberty” and “A Trooper’s Heart,” both released on May 25, 1911 under Flying “A” Studios tutelage.

Former Helix star Smith is NFL?s top passer after upset of Patriots

Though the Chargers have departed San Diego for supposedly greener pastures in Los Angeles, Helix High School graduate Alex Smith continues to keep America’s Finest City in the NFL spotlight after leading the league with 368 passing yards in last week’s round of season opening games.

Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs earned the spotlight in Week 1 with their 42-27 defeat of the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots Sept. 7 in Foxboro, Mass.

Ruis wins Del Mar Futurity with Bolt d? Oro

Mick Ruis was raised in the Rios Canyon area of Lakeside, which is named for his great-grandfather Peter Rios, and wrestled for El Capitan High School. Ruis is now affiliated with the sport of horse racing and is both the owner and the trainer of Bolt d’Oro, who won the Del Mar Futurity which was contested September 4 on the final day of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s summer meet.

New pool is cool and now open at St. Madeleine Sophie?s Center

They are the swim students, all developmentally disabled, of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center and students that can now use the newly opened junior Olympic sized pool in El Cajon located at 2119 E. Madison. The aquatic center’s ribbon cutting and ceremony was Sept. 9.

Sycuan Powwow showcases Native American culture

The drumming and haunting chants of men in native song, the swirl of color, feathers and beads of Native American dance was all part of the thrill at the 28th Annual Sycuan Powwow on the Sycuan reservation near the casino. The annual powwow, which took place this year Sept. 8 - 10, is a source of pride for the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

Celebrating life at the 15th annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Dinner and Regatta

For the 15th year in a row, Sharp HospiceCare held its annual Benefit Dinner and Regatta. “Celebrating Life” was the motto for this year’s events. The Benefit Dinner on August 26 hosted 500 people at the Hotel del Coronado. The next day, 43 sailboats participated in the race in the bay, with 700 on 38 yachts from Coronado Yacht Club watching the colorful spinnakers out on the sparkling water.
