Sharp on survival, saving lives through injury prevention

When Tim Boice was in high school, his vision for the future included pitching for a major league baseball team. Being confined to a wheelchair was not a thought until he suffered a debilitating spinal injury; now it is his only option. But Tim uses his story and his life to teach others.

“Use your mind, affect your body,” Tim says, adding that for a disabling injury, “prevention is the only cure. I’m preaching prevention.”

Jason patiently waited for several cars to pull out of the row where he had spotted an empty parking space. As he slowly approached another driver pulled up at the same time wanting to park. Jason cheerfully smiled and waved to the other driver to take the space then continued just a short distance to another empty spot.

Grossmont, Steele Canyon win CIF water polo titles

Grossmont head coach Clint McLaughlin may have entered La Jolla High School’s Coggan Pool dry on Saturday night, Nov. 11, but he left it soaking wet from head to toe. 

Following a nail-biter game, won in the final seconds of the last quarter to clinch the Division CIF Championship title, McLaughlin joined his boys in the pool for a ‘victory lap.’

Walls are everywhere. They separate apartment units, hold up roofs and even allow the winning run to score as homerun balls sail over them. Walls keep out loud freeway noise from disturbing others living in the houses that were built near them. Parents help tennis program succeed

There is definitely a stigma towards parents in high school sports. Steele Canyon high school’s tennis program defies it. 

With a ‘no-cut’ policy that gave the team 52 players this year, the Cougars depend on their parent volunteers to help coach. 

Head coach Jerry Segawa said the parents have attributed both to the performance and the culture of the program.

What started as a dream to help families with children suffering from cancer in San Diego County may be at risk with a status on Facebook announcing the sudden resignation of the entire board of Sons of Charity (SOC) along with several volunteers. The threads, which began Nov. 1, were similar in nature from board members and volunteers that they “will no longer have any affiliation with SOC or Sam Diego (Mejia),” founder and CEO.
