The flame on the oil lamp flickered as a cool breeze pushed the fabric hanging in the doorway to one side. The evening air was refreshing to Peter as he watched the sun disappear behind the western wall of the Temple signaling the beginning of the Passover festival. The Boys and Girls Clubs of East County (BGCEC) has begun construction of its new Brady Family Clubhouse in La Mesa that will house the Gagon Academy and Bill Walton Gymnasium. The new clubhouse is located past a ball field on the west end of the La Mesa Arts Academy.

County Planning Commissioners approves new sand mine in Lakeside?s Moreno Valley

With all six San Diego County Planning Commissioners voting “yes” for the new sand mining project on Moreno Ave. in Lakeside, owner Bob Turner and his project engineer Kenneth J. Discenza are finally ready to celebrate. “It’s about time,” said Turner, pointing out that it took 20 years to reach this resolution.  Discenza is hoping to start digging on Sept. 15, but that still depends on a long list of conditions included in the Major Use Permit and Reclamation Plan.

The Marines have landed in a sweet spot in downtown Lemon Grove. 

On the morning of Wednesday, July 19, city residents and dignitaries gathered at the historical 1912 Bakery Building to celebrate the new ownership and operators of the Lemon Grove Bakery at 3308 Main Street. The event was the grand opening of the restyled business, which has set up operations in the restored 105-year-old Mission Revival style building, between the famous Lemon Statue and city hall.

The Grossmont College Griffins have added more hardware to their golden year of athletics.

A state community college championship in baseball has vaulted the college to the top to win the coveted Chet DeVore Trophy for the second straight year as the most successful men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic program in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

Ryan McConnel won the Optimist Bulls Only Rodeo XIX competition July 14-15 at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds.

McConnel, who is originally from New Mexico and now lives in the Fresno County town of Tollhouse, was the only one of the 40 riders to stay on both bulls and had a score of 143 points on two head. Nuevo cowboy Corey Rickard placed second in the average (aggregate) with a score of 79 on one head, which was also the highest score of the rodeo hosted by the Lakeside Optimist Club.

Santee City Council to send official communication to Sheriff Gore to change ...

In a 5-0 unanimous vote, the Santee City Council has authorized Mayor John Minto to send an official letter from the council to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore requesting a change in Gore’s internal policy regarding the issuance of concealed weapon permits. Specifically, the council is asking Sheriff Gore to accept self-defense or personal protection to fulfill California’s requirement of “good cause.”

It’s been said before that there is always a period of calm before a storm. A beautiful moment when the sky is clear and the winds cease to blow. Birds cheerfully sing from branches above us while butterflies flutter in the breeze before our eyes. Out in the distance, out over the horizon, however, high clouds are beginning to blow in. They begin to gather into thick, dark gray storm clouds that block out all the beautiful light. East County teams get passing grade in summer football test

Seven East County high school football teams participated in last weekend’s 11th annual South County Passing Tournament at Southwestern College.

One of them was still playing when it came time to shift the finals to the main campus stadium, the same field where six San Diego Section championship games were played last December.

Football programs stay sharp during summer session

Summers do not mean vacation for everyone. San Diego’s football programs have commenced summer session training and East County schools are doing their part to keep their teams in shape for a competitive season come the new school year.

Games are held all summer, all over the county. On Friday, July 7, two-dozen teams rolled into Southwestern College in Chula Vista for a two-day tournament, with Grossmont Conference schools like Helix, Valhalla, and El Capitan ready to scope out the competition.
