(SanDiego.CityRegions.Com, October 07, 2012 ) San Diego, CA – On December 27, 2012, the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA will host the 2012 Bridgepoint Holiday Bowl. The stadium is expected to be full, so fans are urged as early as now to arrive at the venue early to avoid inconvenience. The event will kickoff at 6:45 PM PST, and will see teams from the Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences battle it out.
The 2012 game will be the 35th event of the annual post-season NCAA-sanctioned Division I-A college football bowl game, which is held every year at San Diego’s famous Qualcomm Stadium. The event, known since 2010 as the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, is sponsored by Bridgepoint Education, who replaced Pacific Life and other previous sponsors such as SeaWorld, Plymouth, Culligan, and Thrifty Car Rental.
The Bridgepoint Holiday Bowl was founded back in 1978; back then, it pitted the Western Athletic Conference against at-large opponents. During the first seven games, WAV was represented by Brigham Young University.
Over the years, the annual event has involved several major names in the industry, including BYU, who has played 11 Holiday Bowls in total, which is more than any other team has played. In 1980, the team’s stint at the Holiday Bowl made headlines when they played a game dubbed as ‘The Miracle Bowl’ wherein they smashed a 20-point lead by Southern Methodist and went on to win the game during the last play. In 1984, they also won the national championship against the University of Michigan Wolverines, marking the first time that the title was won at a Hoiday Bowl game.
Currently, the game features Pac-12 team and Big 12 team, which are now 3rd placer and 5th placer respectively. The two teams have retained their contracts and will play until the 2013 matchup.
Last year, the game saw the Texas Longhorns defeat the California Golden Bears in a 21-10 victory. The Most Valuable Player awards went to Texan QB David Ash and Texan LB Keenan Robinson.
As of now, the two teams who will see each other on the field for the December 27 event have not yet been confirmed.
The game is slated to air on ESPN and will be broadcast on the ESPN Radio Network.
The event is also expected to get sold out, as six out of the last nine games have so far exhibited such impressive performance. Thus, those who are hoping to catch the game live should book their tickets early at ACheapSeat.com under the category of Qualcomm Stadium tickets.
