Use Of Computer, Phone, TV Screens Takes A Toll On Eye Health reports Dr Selby OD

(SanDiego.CityRegions.Com, November 15, 2012 ) San Diego, CA -- Laptop and desktop computers, smart phones and other modern communications and entertainment devices may have made life easier or more pleasurable, but they are exacting a toll on users’ eyes, health professionals warn. Increased use of video screens is making eye strain a growing health problem, and advancing technology is almost certain to increase screen viewing, worsening the problem.

Office workers can spend most of their working day planted in from of a computer screen, and laptops, tablets and smartphones mean we can carry the exposure with us during non-work hours. One British ophthalmic surgeon says there is no question frequent, prolonged use of screens “can have a detrimental impact on eyesight."

He also notes a recent survey found almost two-thirds of 18 to 24-year-olds saying they checked their smartphones at least every 30 minutes. They also said they frequently watched TV while also using a laptop, tablet, smartphone or computer. Even 30% of UK adults wearing glasses or contacts say they also indulged in multi-screen viewing.

A leading optical chain in England reports 26% of adults have seen an optician for eye fatigue after watching TV or using a computer or similar device. Other common eye strain symptoms are bloodshot eyes, difficulty with visual focus, headaches and soreness around the eyes. Since most people blink about 25% less when viewing screens, prolonged use can also exacerbate eye dryness. Blinking is essential for keeping eyes lubricated. In extreme cases, dry eyes can cause cornea scratching and impaired vision.

Eye strain also worsens existing vision problems or defects, as eye muscles become fatigued from extended use. That is especially true for people who have one eye weaker or with a different focus than the other: the imbalance contributes to eyestrain and headaches.

To avoid or minimize eye strain, health experts recommend regular testing (annually for children and seniors, every two years for everyone else, unless advised otherwise). They also say it is important to take regular breaks when using video screens for an extended period. If you are not able to get up and walk around, they recommend following the 20-20-20 rule to avoid eye strain: after 20 minutes using a screen, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Regular breaks and eye drops can help keep your eyes moist, but see a professional if the problem persists. And while away from work, avoid simultaneous use of multiple screens, since it can put undue strain on visual focusing mechanisms.
