(SanDiego.CityRegions.Com, June 14, 2013 ) Irvine, CA -- A new study out of the University of Texas finds that the state of a couple’s bedroom may reveal information about their relationship. Are clothes scattered on the floor? Is the bed made? Each of these scenarios may help researchers understand what makes a happy home.
Spearheaded by psychology graduate student, Lindsay Graham, and in collaboration with professor of psychology Sam Gosling, a team of student researchers has been hard at work uncovering why a couple’s relationship status can be determined - or at least better understood - by common household arrangements.
Can you give an overview of your current research?
The home environment is of utmost importance to individuals as it is often required to meet both practical and psychological needs. Many new couples face the challenge of integrating their possessions and preferences to create a shared space.
There is not much information concerning how couples create shared spaces. Who chooses the design of the home? And whose stuff goes where? These are just some of the questions that we are exploring and hoping to answer.
In what way do you collect data?
We start by taking 360-degree photos of the space, including close-ups to capture the minute details - from titles of books to the placement of objects. Then a team of coders records their impressions of the space through surveys. They also document the physical structure of the space. Only things that are visible are documented - a process which can take between 20 to 60 minutes. The final step is a survey completed by the homeowners. Each individual fills in a survey about her/himself and her/his partner.
How does dirty laundry on the floor help to explain an individual and what’s important to that person?
All items that are displayed send a message about one’s identity, or how you feel, think and act in everyday situations. Sometimes items are deliberate signals, while others are more subtle. One example is religious icons being displayed by a religious person to demonstrate her/his
values. More subtle items include photographs from a nice trip you had or a memento passed down by a family member.
