(SanDiego.CityRegions.Com, May 13, 2014 ) San Diego, CA -- For the second time in three years, a Syracuse University student is the winner of the Jim Nantz Award. Senior Kevin Fitzgerald has been chosen as the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sports broadcaster.
The Jim Nantz award, named in honor of the veteran CBS Sports broadcaster, is presented annually by Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA). This year’s trophy will be presented June 9th at the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s annual awards banquet in Salisbury, NC.
“Kevin finished 18th in last year’s competition. The improvement he’s made in the past 12 months jumped off his reel,” says STAA CEO Jon Chelesnik.
Fitzgerald was one of two Syracuse students to win All-America honors. Junior David Fine is the other. Four other students from the New York campus are ranked in the Top 20.

“The purpose of the Jim Nantz Award and All-America program is to encourage collegiate sports broadcasters to strive to achieve Jim’s professionalism and excellence,” Chelesnik says.
Judges for this year’s awards included Chelesnik, Adam Amin of ESPN; Learfield Sports VP of Broadcast Operations Tom Boman; Carson-Newman Play-by-Play Voice and inaugural Nantz Award winner Adam Cavalier; Joe Davis of ESPN; Sports Talk Host/Atlanta Falcons Broadcaster Wes Durham; former Nantz winner Alex Faust, men’s basketball play-by-play voice at Northeastern University; and Ohio State University Broadcaster Paul Keels.
